Today, the Buffalo News reported that the Bentley's black box could not be recovered due to extensive damage. The Niagara Falls Police Department investigation is closed without a formal determination of the cause of the accident.
Wow. It' s been a week. That could mean it was destroyed in the conflagration.
That is certainly possible, I suppose. In my experience the average person cannot accurately estimate the speed of a vehicle, so I didn't necessarily credit the witness's account that the vehicle was traveling "in excess of 100 mph."
That Bentley is extraordinarily powerful and can go in excess of 200 mph (see below), so 100+ mph is certainly plausible in an uncontrolled acceleration scenario. That must have been absolutely terrifying of the occupants. May they RIP.
WGRZ reports that, as of 24 hours ago, the "black box" [Event Data Recorder] has not been recovered yet. Without that, determining a final cause will have to rely on circumstantial factors.
Thank you for your sober take on this tragic accident. I have come to the same working theory. One thing I will note is that control pedals in RHD vehicles are transposed but not mirrored. In simpler words, the gas pedal is always under the right foot, which in Australia means it is next to the fuse box. In North America, the gas pedal abuts the transmission tunnel. This is why the Australian recall notice has no immediate application in this case. But with that said, the couple were reported to be saying to friends that their accelerator was having "problems." What that means exactly is unclear, and I hope that someone can add some detail to that.

Any forensic analysis will depend on what can be determined from the wreckage. If the vehicle is too damaged, we may never know the cause for certain.

Thank you Harry, for your comment.
I was wondering about why there was a recall in Australia but the US. That explains it.
