Why is a Trump-Supporting, Conservative Republican from Ruby-Red Alabama Really Gutting the Military?

Since February 2023 Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville has infamously and single-handedly gutted the military by placing a “hold” on Senate confirmations to top military positions.

The Situation is Dire

Tuberville has created a crisis in the US military. Positions without permanent replacements include Marine Commandant, a post that is now unfilled for the first time since the Civil War.

Three more members of the Joint Chiefs, including its chairman, Army General Mark Milley, will reach the end of their terms in August and September. That would leave half the Joint Chiefs positions without permanent Senate-confirmed nominees.

As reported by the Washington Post, the number of positions blocked from Senate confirmation is set to rise to 650 by the end of the year, according to the Defense Department — a majority of the military’s 852 flag and general officer positions.
