Author’s Note: The following short essay is one of my own favorites but I almost didn’t publish it. Although I love Bill Evans and I find Jung’s theory of the collective unconscious compelling, I live with the clear impression that the world finds my interests tedious and obscure.
I consulted with an editor whose eyes barrel rolled at the mention of bebop and, I suspect, thought I was making up Jung’s theory. Best to go with a “listicle” to gain readers, I was told. “Top 7 Jazz Musicians Who Were Addicted To Heroin - You Won’t Believe #6!”
I ignored the advice, published anyway, and to my surprise “Alexa Is My Collective Unconscious” is one of my most popular posts. Indeed, a subscriber was sufficiently moved to take a photo of Scott LaFaro Drive in Geneva, New York (LaFaro’s hometown) which I insert in context.
