I will be reviewing tomorrow’s final performance of the 2022-2023 Season, Verdi’s Requiem.
I don’t think music changed, I think newspapers did. They cut arts writing for the same reason they cut everything else: it didn’t make them money.
Newspapers and Magazines No Longer Publish Music Reviews
Those who follow my concert reviews may ask, why I am not publishing my review on Buffalo Spree, as have been doing for about a decade? The answer is simple, Spree made the editorial decision not to publish music criticism anymore.
I take absolutely no umbrage with that decision; I have nothing but respect and appreciation for the publishers. They gave me a forum for my work and never once asked me to change a word of my work. I could have hardly asked for more (except for money).
I may be wrong, but I believe Buffalo News stopped publishing music criticism years ago, so I may be it when it comes to music critics in Buffalo. That is quite a turn of events, considering I have never been paid a dime …
