There is an old (likely apocryphal) story about a newly-appointed chief greenskeeper at a wealthy golf club in the US. He traveled to Scotland to visit the legendary courses and meet with their caretakers.
He found himself sitting across from the elder statesmen of the craft, now retired, in a pub sipping Scotch.
“You need to do three things lad,” he said in his thick brogue, “if you want your course to look line mine.”
“First, you have to have the right tools and you have to know how to use them. Make them a part of you, so they are just an extension of your hand. Do you understand, boy?”
“I think so,” said the American.
“Second, you have to know every inch of the course. You have to know that when the wind comes from the west the fairways on the back nine will be damp near the greens. Are you following?”
