Albany's Removal of Philip Schuyler's Statue is a Good First Step
We Must Confront Our History
History as a discipline is not a static recitation of facts but rather a dynamic, disciplinary process, one that is constantly being challenged and reevaluated.
The City of Albany, New York recently removed a seven-foot statue of Philip Schuler, Revolutionary War General and owner of 40 slaves. I lived in Albany for several years and walked by that statue in front of Albany’s beautiful, Romanesque City Hall hundreds of times. It stood for 100 years.
I say good riddance. It should have been done long ago.
Predictably, the MAGA crowd, including Member of Congress Elisa Stefanik, (R-Albany) laments this “attempt to erase history.”
Pull down the monuments to white supremacy. Pull them all down. They may represent who we were, but not who can be.
